Village of Glenview Police Station

Glenview's new police station, a $22 million, 85,000 sq ft. facility located at the corner of East Lake and Greenwood.

System Management Associates designed and built the building LAN, supporting 150 VoIP phones and 100 computers using Cisco Catalyst switches, deployed in a Master Distribution Facility (MDF) and three Intermediate Distribution Facilities (IDF). The MDF is connected to the IDFs with fiber-optic cable. Two runs of Category 6 cable run from the MDF and each IDF to the various outlets throughout the building. SMA also architected the augmentation of the Village's star topology network to incorporate the Police Building as a second network Hub. Previously, the Village Hall served as the network's main hub. The LAN consists of a number of VLANs (virtual local-area networks), which isolate the computer traffic from the voice traffic, while allowing both to share the same cabling. SMA also devised a method of using a VLAN to permit Cook County's Livescan equipment to ride the village network's cabling to the county's router, thus avoiding costly additional wiring, and allowing flexibility for future growth.

The Police building is tied into the village wide-area network via a short-haul 5.8GHz microwave link to the Village Hall. The Public Works facility, located across Greenwood Rd. is tied to the village network via a T1 to Village Hall, and an underground Fiber Optic cable to the Police building. This allows for redundant routing in case of the failure of the microwave link.
